Wednesday October 23rd, The National Club hosted a thought-provoking panel discussion on the Future of Senior Living, moderated by Figure3 Principal, Eric Yorath. The panel featured recognized leader in aging and healthcare, Michelle Roth and Vice President at Figure3, Nadine Burdak, who brought her wealth of interior design experience and perspective to the conversation
Baby Boomers represent approximately 25% of Canada’s population, and as they begin to reach the 80+ age milestone, their need for care and support will increase significantly. Unlike previous generations, they have a different vision for how they want to live in their golden years. There is an appetite for hospitality inspired environments with luxury amenities and a high level of service, while still promoting the feeling of home. As people live longer, healthier lives, it is increasingly important that these living environments are designed for people’s next phase of life rather than simply as a place to pass through.
Michelle kicked off the conversation by sharing insight on the shifting landscape of senior living followed by Nadine, who took the group through some of the impactful ways that design can be used to navigate the complex demands of senior living environments. Some of the major topics of the evening included ageism, the benefits of intergenerational communities, the value of wholistic wellness which prioritizes vibrant, active and purposeful lifestyles for seniors, and the many layers of policy and regulation that contribute to lengthy timelines for developing senior living communities.
The session ended with a Q&A period that also allowed other industry professionals to share their valuable perspectives. With the demand for senior living heading towards all-time highs and the increased appetite for elevated, hospitality inspired environments, the need for innovative solutions is more critical than ever.
