In celebration of Earth Week 2025, Figure3 embraced the opportunity to further our commitment to sustainable interior design and take meaningful action—both within our studio and out in the community. The week was thoughtfully curated to align with our design philosophy, one that prioritizes continuous learning, growth, and the ongoing pursuit of environmentally conscious practices.
As a member of ONE Global Design, Figure3, with the network of more than 20 independently owned Interior Design and Architecture firms around the world, collaboratively put together a week of events. It was a chance to engage with sustainability leaders around the world, and also an opportunity for some friendly competition between firms, to encourage staff participation.
Throughout the week, the team engaged in a series of insightful learning sessions and CEUs (Continuing Education Units):
-
Tarkett shared their holistic approach to sustainability, including efforts to create a circular economy and a case study exploring how mushrooms were used to bioremediate broadloom waste.
-
Haworth led a CEU on Circular Design, breaking down the core principles of designing for a circular economy and how designers can embed these values into their specifications.
-
Material Bank delivered a virtual CEU focused on embodied carbon and the impact of interiors, offering valuable tools for evaluating products through a sustainability lens.
-
Interface hosted a special in-person CEU and screening of Beyond Zero, the award-winning documentary showcasing how a company radically transformed itself to reverse its environmental impact.
Curated by Creative Director and ESG Committee member Alexis Palenstein, the office was additionally transformed into a living gallery of sustainable innovation. Thirteen vignettes featuring bio-based and sustainable materials—many of which are proudly made in Canada—were installed in shared spaces throughout the studio. These displays offered our designers the chance to explore new materials and products at their own pace, sparking conversations around how to integrate more sustainable choices into our work. Coffee breaks hosted by Teknion and Keilhauer provided opportunities for casual discussion and Q&A around their own sustainable product offerings featured in the office vignettes.
“The goal was to bring sustainability to life in a way that felt accessible and inspiring. From product exploration to deepening our collective knowledge, Earth Week was a celebration of what’s possible when we commit to learning and evolving as designers” said Palenstein.
The week concluded with hands-on community action as Figure3 participated in Clean Toronto Together, the largest annual cleanup campaign in Canada. This city-wide initiative brought together thousands of volunteers across Toronto—residents, students, businesses, and city staff alike—to help keep public spaces free of litter. Our team joined in with a local cleanup effort, wrapping up the week on a high note of collective pride and shared impact.
Earth Week 2025 was a powerful reminder that sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s a mindset and a continuous journey. At Figure3, we’re committed to intentional and sustainable interior design with purpose, and this week’s events served as both a catalyst and a celebration of what we can achieve when we design with the planet in mind.
