For the new Strada rental project by RioCan on College Street, Figure3 was driven to ensure its interiors would fit seamlessly within Toronto’s beloved Little Italy district. With some cultural similarities to New York’s Little Italy, visual references such as its industrial identity were used as an inspiration to create a timeless design.
In one of the most happening neighbourhoods in the city, Figure3 needed to establish the right approach to resonate with the local demographic. An intensive research process with the RioCan team informed the design solutions, where individuality and character stood out as main attributes to express. The design is a mix of traditional sensibilities and authentic materials such as marble and red brick paired with modern elements such as touchscreen technology connecting the dweller to the neighbourhood story. Wanting Strada to feel grand, additional space originally intended for retail was carved out to create more of a social atmosphere for the lobby, which now includes a lounge and coffee bar.
The exposed brick and concrete floor in the main lobby, paired with a contrast of antique mirrors and contemporary lighting create a modern yet intimate feel. Fabric-inspired embossed porcelain tile harken back to an older time, displaying deconstructed images of peacocks and the Italian countryside. Amenities include a small speakeasy style lounge, a gym, and on the top floor, a party room with casual eclectic furniture and fireplace, and a large outdoor landscaped terrace for social gatherings.
